Mótha

Bio

Mótha is a Belgian collective that originated when musicians Maarten Marchau (wooden flutes) and Thomas Hoste (hurdy-gurdy) decided to explore out of the box possibilities of their instruments. They soon discovered the magic of their coming together. Using loopers and sound processors, a whole new musical landscape arose.

They decided to test out these improvisations in all kinds of settings; they performed in the folk, metal, butoh, alternative and classical scene and even guided dance workshops.

In 2019, Maarten and Thomas collaborated with Simon Segers (Black Flower, MDCIII), Colin H. Van Eeckhout (CHVE, Amenra) and Nele Nu (poetry in motion) in a similar improvisation project called ‘De Manen Opzij’. This led to Nele being invited as Mótha’s female counterpart. Since then, the band has performed as an intriguing trio on several inspiring occasions and locations.

Mótha sets are expressions of freedom you don’t want to miss, if you are looking for an alienating experience, a musical and poetic deep dive, an atmosphere that opens up all senses.
