Stefano Pilia and Massimo Pupillo.

Bio

Massimo Pupillo is a bass player, improviser, and composer, born in Rome, Italy. He ’s mostly known as a founding member of Zu, he has released some 65 albums ( and lots of singles and compilations) on international labels like Deutsche Grammophone, House Of Mythology, Ipecac, etc

In parallel with Zu he has kept a very open and curious ethos which brings him to collaborate with musicians and artists coming from very different paths and genres: from classical music with the incredible piano duo of Katia and Marielle Labeque, to contemporary music with soprano Barbara Hannigan and with electronic music pioneer Alvin Curran of Musica Elettronica Viva, from rock icons like Mike Patton to experimental music figures like FM Einheit of Einstuerzende Neubauten, David Tibet of Current 93, Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))), Oren Ambarchi, etc., to freejazz heavyweights like Peter Brötzmann or Toshinori Kondo.

Notably in 2016 he has worked with Katia Labeque and David Chalmin, french dancer  Marie-Agnès Gillot, performing live with Bryce and Aaaron Dessner of The National and Bon Iver at Paris Philarmonie.

Stefano Pilia is a guitar player and electro-acoustic composer born in Genoa and based in Bologna. His work has become progressively concerned with the research of the sculptural dimensions of sound and it’s relations with space, memory and time suspension both through instrumental experimental practices and investigations into the recording and production process. He is one of the founder members of the seminal band 3/4HadBeenEliminated, a synthesis between improvisation, electro-acoustic composition and avant-rock sensibilities.

He collaborated with several artists and musicians ( Oren Ambarchi, John Parish, Angela Bullock, Gianluigi Toccafondo, WuMing, Phill Niblock, etc  ) and he has been published on more than 40 recordings (House of Mithology, Hapna, Die Schachtel, Soleilmoon, Bluechopsticks/Drag City, and many more.)
